I would not worry too much about keyword density but I would at least add the keyword of each page into an H1 or H2 header tag. This will help the search engines know better what your page is about and how to rank it.
Focus your efforts on creating great content that people will appreciate and will want to add a link on their site if they have one. The fact is if you have great content that is unique, over time you will get plenty of natural backlinks and thus your rankings will grow. Also if you are always adding great content you are much more likely to get repeat visitors as they will always return to see what's new.
By targeting your site's content for well searched keywords you will get traffic. Also tell other sites similar to yours about your site and if they can include a link in exchange, this is called reciprocal linking but it can be a great way to get targeted traffic. Another great way to get targeted traffic is thorough writing and distributing articles, at the end of your articles you get to add your sites link to get more traffic and this approach is free so I suggest you look into it further.
